Golf Day @ Knowle Golf Club 2nd July 2009

It was a beautiful day, the sun was blazing and as the teams arrived they were greeted with coffee and bacon rolls.  There were still a few bits and pieces to organise but the 12 noon tee-off went to plan and very soon all the teams were off and putting!  With 4 hole in one prizes to be won, including a VW golf and prizes for the winning team, the longest drive and nearest the pin, there was a lot to play for.

The day was going well and everybody was enjoying the event but at 4pm from out of nowhere the heavens opened and I mean opened .. it absolutely poured down and the thundered rolled.

Everybody was soaked through in seconds, but still laughing as they made their way back to the clubhouse only to discover the brook that runs at the front of the clubhouse had burst it’s banks and the course had started to flood.  The storm was short lived and the sun soon returned but the decision was made to abandon the game by all , well nearly all.

The evening meal started at six pm which did not leave much time for the two remaining four-balls out on the course, who heroically saw out the rain-storm to complete their 18 holes, to get showered and ready for the meal. Instead of the hero’s welcome they were expecting, the host for the evening took great delight in quoting the Royal and Ancient rules which states that any player continuing to play after the hooter had sounded should be disqualified. The feeling of power was intoxicating for the master of ceremonies as he threatened all teams that had failed to sign the cards with disqualification unless they made a contribution to the charity. Common sense prevailed and all cards stood – the winner of the team event was Paul Cains/ Mathew Hudd/ Johno and Dave Griffin (aka el Bandito);  the individual event went to Derek Isles with 43 points – well done everybody, particularly those who stayed out and completed in such freak weather conditions.

Companies and individuals were very generous in donating prizes which were played for throughout the evening. ‘The Golden Tee’ saw Dean walk away with a summer bag, umbrella and hat kindly donated by Wayne Raven. Battleships saw Kevin pocket an Adams driver donated by Mike Constance. Thanks go to Chris Whitford at Mitsubishi, Art-el, Jim and Damian Whittard and Martin Henry (Positive Solutions) for donating prizes for the raffle. The three games generated over £600.

Finally the evening was wrapped up with an auction of five lots which rose over £1000. The prizes including a signed Bristol City shirt, Bristol Rovers VIP day out, evening stay and meal at Lucknam Park and a signed Marcus Trescothick England Cricket Shirt – thanks to Nick Legg, Bristol Rovers Football Club, Lucknam Park and Marcus Trescothick for their donations.

During the auction the group had there revenge with the host by offering to pay to see the lifelong Rovers fan done the infamous Bristol City shirt 1897 1982. He did say after the event

‘Everyman has his price, at the end of the day we are here to raise money so if donning the shirt for a few seconds gets us some money so be it. Wearing the shirt does not change anything. It does not diminish my memory of Gary Smart smashing the winning goal on News Years day at Ashton Gate in 1987, my joy in Blackpool as Rovers won the third division championship in 1989-90 after beating Bristol City 3-0 at Twerton Park to regain top spot from City with less than a week to go and the most recent 1-0 victory over two legs in the cup semi final to take the gas to Cardiff 2006-07. The one thing that there was no price for was for me to kiss the badge.’

Overall the event raised nearly £3,200 – thank you everybody that contributed to the day.
