Autumn Ball – 17th October 2009

Many thanks to all of you who contributed to such a successful night.  The evening started off with a drinks reception before everyone settled down for dinner in the Ballroom.  There was a real sense of occasion with everyone ‘suited and booted’ and ready to party.

After dinner Journey Up The Wood provided the live music, ably supported by Dan, Dan the disco man.  Tim Brain, the base player, went to school with Mike and made sure the boys in the band were up for a big one.  They started off with a cover of The Clash’s ‘I Fought The Law’ before going through a rendition of numbers from the fifties through to the present day, quickly building a willing crowd into a frenzy.  The highlight of the show was the final number when the band joined the crowd on the dance floor to lead a congo for a roof raising finale of ‘I Would Walk 500 Miles’.  I was particularly pleased that a number of the band had vacated the stage during this number as it meant I could live my rock star dream and join Tim on stage to provide backing vocals.  If you want to find out more about the band and how to book them for future events, please visit their webpage at

During the evening a raffle, a table draw and an auction helped push the total raised to well over £4,000.  Many thanks go out to those that donated prizes including Stef Dring, Eddie Langford, Jadeine & Clive Watts, Sally & Jim Whittard, Carol Hodges, Paul Williams of Bristol Blue Glass, Fred for donating his amazing wood carvings, Russell for the West Ham tickets, Chris Skidmore, Bristol Rugby Team, Somerset Cricket Team plus many more.  I must offer a special thank you to Strawberry Fields who so kindly donated an auction prize to host a party in Bath for 80 people on their newly refurbished boat, the Penny Lane.

My only regret was that I did not take a camera, if any of you have pictures of the event please send them through and I will upload them onto the site.

Thank you all for making the event such a special occasion for us.

Best wishes
